The U.S. says changes to Iran’s Arak research reactor would reduce Iran’s likelihood of developing a nuclear weapon, Reuters reports.
Analysts from Princeton University say the annual production of plutonium would be decreased to less than a kilogram if Iran lowered Arak’s power capacity and changed the way the plant is fuelled, according to Reuters. The plant needs approximately eight kilograms to produce an atomic weapon.
The Arak research reactor has been a point of contention in the nuclear talks with Iran and the P5+1.
“These redesigns would not reduce the usefulness of the reactor for making radioisotopes and conducting research. This approach would meet Iran’s needs and would address the concerns of the international community,” says Princeton’s Program on Science and Global Security.
Delegates from Iran, the U.S., Russia, France, Germany, Britain, and China will continue talks in Vienna in an attempt to solve the nuclear dispute.
The U.S. is worried that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons while Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
