A suicide car bomber attacked Yemen's Defense Ministry Thursday killing at least twenty and leaving dozens wounded, according to reports from Reuters and BBC.
The car bomb detonated at the gate of the ministry in the capital's old district early Thursday morning.
"The attack took place shortly after working hours started at the ministry when a suicide bomber drove a car into the gate," a Defense Ministry source told Reuters.
Another witness to Thursday's attack told reporters that "The explosion was very violent, the whole place shook because of it and plumes of smoke rose from the building."
Gunshots were also heard near the ministry at the time of the explosion.
A few army and ambulance vehicles rushed to the scene shortly after the attack. According to BBC, 20 individuals have died thus far from the attacks. It is not yet clear how many other individuals have been wounded in the attack.
Violent clashes and attacks in Yemen have become commonplace since the oust of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2011 with southern secessionists often clashing with government and nothern powers. The chaos has further allowed Al Qaeda operatives to strengthen their presence in the Gulf country.
