The World Health Organization (WHO) and Sudanese authorities have taken measures to prevent the Ebola fever from spreading from Uganda to Sudan, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
Hashim al-Waqei, coordinator of WHO's Technical Unit, was quoted in Al-Ayam daily as saying his organization’s office in Lokichokio in north Kenya was monitoring the disease in the border district of northern Uganda.
He stressed that no cases of the disease had been reported in Sudan.
WHO has sent medical supplies to Uganda aimed at slowing the spread of the disease and formed a technical committee to follow up and contain Ebola, which is now confined to the Gulu district, Waqei said.
The paper did not describe what the supplies were.
The newspaper reported that the Sudanese health ministry has instructed Sudan's regional health chiefs to take the necessary precautionary measures and tighten controls at border crossings.
The ministry's epidemic administration said medicines are available in case the disease surfaces in Sudan, the daily reported.
