Wafi City, part of Dubai’s diversified business conglomerate Wafi Group, has scooped the UAE’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating for its new District Cooling Chiller Plant (DCCP) ONE - the first phase of a mega 20,000 ton district cooling system planned for the site.
The LEED rating is awarded by the USA’s Green Building Council (USGBC) for demonstrating outstanding design and construction practices that are environmentally responsible, cost effective, and which provide healthy living and working spaces.
“The silver ranking is possibly the highest that can be achieved for an industrial building and Wafi has earned this distinction through use of superior planning and high operating standards,” said Ron Coulter, Building Services Manager, Wafi Group.
“Wafi Group is committed to using the latest technology to make Dubai a ‘green’ city in line with the vision of the Dubai Government, to promote and develop the use of alternative energy sources for commercial buildings.”
DCCP ONE was planned, engineered and the construction managed, from concept to completion, by Dubai-based Green Technologies – Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and Project Managers. The first phase of the project was built by ETA’s Gulf District Cooling division and Khansaheb Civil Engineering.
The plant is part of a major development programme at Wafi City, which includes Raffles Dubai – the first Middle East property from the internationally renowned Raffles Hotels and Resorts, and Khan Murjan – the recreation of an ancient Islamic Souk, where artists and craftspeople will be able to showcase their work in a unique and authentic environment.
