An Iraqi woman was killed on Sunday in an explosion when US soldiers blew up a door during a raid in a town near Iraq’s border with Syria, the US military said in a statement on Monday.
“Forces encountered resistance to entry in one target location and used a door breaching charge to gain access to the target through a reinforced steel door. The blast resulted in the death of one Iraqi female and injuries to two other females in the house,” the military said.
The military said the incident, which took place in the western Iraqi town of Rawa, was under investigation.
The woman’s killing came as the US Third Armored Cavalry Regiment (3rd ACR) launched “Operations Rifles Fury” in Rawa, a mission aimed “to kill or capture anti-Coalition Forces and destroy terrorist training camps.”
According to AFP, the troops made a total of 17 raids on Sunday and arrested 81 persons, of whom 11 were considered “high value targets.” Across the entire western province of Anbar, the military said it arrested 96 “terrorists” Sunday.
In the town of Fallujah, 50 kilometres west of Baghdad, the 82nd Airborne Division conducted seven ”cordon-and-search” operations and detained 14 people involved in ”financing and recruiting foreign fighters.”
