A roadside bomb attack on a U.S. convoy in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul Sunday killed one American soldier and injured another, a U.S. military spokesman said Monday. According to Reuters, the attack was on a main road in Mosul.

Meanwhile, supporters of the Iraqi Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr took over the governor's office in the British-controlled port city of Basra, AFP reported.

Dozens of armed Mehdi Army militiamen stormed into the governor's office in the southern city at dawn, raising a green flag on the roof of the building, the report added.

Mehdi Army militiamen were seen deployed inside and on the rooftop of the governor's office alongside policemen who had been inside the building when it was overtaken.

On Sunday, Sadr supporters seized a number of police stations and other public buildings in several Iraqi towns, including a major suburb of Baghdad, during a day of violent clashes with US-led occupation forces that left at least 24 Iraqis and at least nine occupation soldiers dead.

On his part, Sadr called on his supporters to "terrorize the enemy".

In a statement issued from his headquarters in the central Iraqi city of Kufa, he said, "There is no use for demonstrations, as your enemy loves to terrify and suppress opinions and despises peoples." "Terrorize your enemy, as we cannot remain silent over its violations," he added.

Elsewhere, a US military patrol was attacked with rocket ‏
