Photos of Saddam Hussein on the day of his capture surfaced Friday across the Internet.
U.S. officials would not not comment on the photos.
The sequence of photos shows Saddam pinned to the ground at gunpoint while soldiers search him and then bind his wrists.
One photo may show Saddam bleeding from the mouth.
Pentagon officials denied they had released the photographs. But, according to CNN, the photos appear to have been taken by someone in, or working closely with, the U.S. military when troops captured Saddam on Dec. 13 at a farm compound near the village of Ad Dawr on the banks of the Tigris River outside Tikrit.
Leading human rights organization Amnesty International has branded as humiliating the publication of previous images of Saddam Hussein in US captivity. Those pictures, however, were defended by U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who said it was clearly important that people knew Saddam was alive and really had been caught.
