US President George W. Bush on Friday named C. David Welch ambassador to Egypt.

Welch, a career foreign service member, has served as assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of International Organization Affairs since 1998, said The Associated Press.

He has held a variety of other posts in Washington and abroad.

Bush announced the nomination during a trip to Austin, Texas, where he toured a state history museum, said the AP.

Welch will replace Daniel Kurtzer.

Kurtzer was confirmed as Ambassador to Egypt on November 6, 1997, and arrived in Egypt on January 8, 1998, according to the website of the US embassy in Cairo.

Kurtzer has been in the foreign service since 1976, and holds the rank of Minister-Counselor – Albawaba.com
