UPS (NYSE:UPS), the world’s largest package delivery company, recently celebrated a major milestone by completing ten successful years of operations in the UAE.

UPS has operated in the UAE as a joint venture with Gulf Agency Dubai (GAC) since 1996.  This successful partnership has helped UPS realize it’s objective of synchronising global commerce to businesses of all size in the UAE.

Operating in one of the fastest growing markets in the Middle East the company has seen an increase in demand for express delivery and logistics services in recent years. To meet these demands, UPS UAE today comprises 160 well-trained staff and a well-connected network of offices across the seven emirates - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Qaiwain, Ajman and Fujairah as well as offices in the Jebel Ali Free Zone and Dubai Airport Free Zone.

Currently, to meet the growing intercontinental logistics and cargo needs, UPS has over 16 aircrafts that fly in and through the Dubai air hub from Europe (Cologne, Germany) and the Far East (Hong Kong, China, Philippines) every week, carrying goods and packages assigned for delivery in the Middle Eastern, European and Asian markets.

At the air hub, these packages are unloaded, sorted and marked for custom clearance. Once cleared, they are then dispatched through road or air for delivery to its final destination. This role has enabled UPS’s UAE operations to serve as a key facilitator to enable the movement of packages between continents and to operate as the gateway to the diverse Middle Eastern and Asian markets.

“The UAE is a market with tremendous growth opportunity and we are constantly looking at ways to enhance our service to our customers,” said John Tansey, country manager for UPS UAE.

“The development of the free zones, real estate, IT, retail, hospitality and construction sectors offers immense growth opportunities for the cargo and logistics industry. The rapid pace of development in these sectors requires that raw materials and equipment are available on demand. UPS is at the forefront when it comes to adopting user-friendly, Internet-based solutions to help customers track and trace and receive their packages more quickly and easily, making us one of the leading logistics service providers in the UAE with proven expertise across all industries.  As UPS UAE heads into its second decade, our dedicated team will support all businesses and can offer customized services to suit all business needs,” concluded Tansey.

Technology has been an intrinsic part of UPS’s business since its inception. It is estimated that UPS receives globally an average of 10 million online tracking requests per business day—for the nearly 15 million packages that get delivered everyday around the world.

In a move that help UPS integrate in the local Arabic market, the company recently launched its first-ever Arabic website. The site, www.ups-arabic.com, enables customers in key markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE to browse through UPS’s extensive service offerings, track deliveries, and locate their nearest drop-off locations online in their local language.

During the recent celebration of the company’s tenth anniversary at the Mall of the Emirates, UPS honored several staff members who have been part of the company since UPS started operations in the UAE in 1996.
