The UN Security Council will announce a new resolution urging the Houthi rebels to rescind their power, release government officials, and begin diplomatic negotiations, reports AFP.

The resolution states the Houthis must "engage in good faith in the UN-brokered negotiations" being led by U.N. special envoy Jamal Benomar and "safely release President Hadi, Prime Minister [Khalid Mahfoudh] Bahah, members of the cabinet and all individuals under house arrest or arbitrarily detained."

Chaos has consumed the already volatile country of Yemen since the Houthis overthrew former President Hadi's government, dissolving the parliament to consolidate their power.

Thousands of Yemenis have taken to the streets to protest against the Houthi leadership.
