UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will visit Bahrain next month to inaugurate a new United Nations regional headquarters, the government announced Sunday in its weekly cabinet meeting.
Annan will arrive October 4 and stay for six days, the government said, as quoted by the official news agency GNA.
Until December 1998, Bahrain was the seat of the UNSCOM, the UN committee in charge of Iraqi disarmament. The agreement basing UNSCOM in Bahrain expired in March 1999.
Bahrain said in February that it was ready to host the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), which was created in December to replace UNSCOM.
Since June, the country has also been the regional base for the UN Environment Program. The office covers Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, the Palestinian territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen - MANAMA (AFP)
