The United Nations's human rights chief, Giorgi Giacomelli, is to make a five-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories, UN officials announced Tuesday.
Giacomelli will arrive in the region on Wednesday and travel to Israel, the Palestinian territories to investigate allegations of human rights violations, said Veronique Taveau, a spokeswoman for the UN's Commission on Human Rights.
He will go "everywhere it is possible to go and meet the maximum number of people," she said.
The commission was deeply concerned over the crisis in the Middle East, which it was following closely, particularly from its office in the Gaza Strip, said Taveau.
A visit by the UN's human rights commissioner, Mary Robinson, could follow Giacomelli's mission, she said, adding that this depended on the outcome of her rapporeur's trip – GENEVA (AFP)
