Syria has invited two United Nations officials to visit the country to discuss the alleged use of chemical weapons in the ongoing conflict, a U.N. spokesman told AFP on Wednesday.
Syria’s offer was made to Ake Sellstrom, a U.N.-appointed Swedish scientist, and Angela Kane, the U.N.’s High Representative for Disarmament, both of whom accepted the invitation, according to AFP.
Martin Nesirky, spokesman for the U.N. chief, did not tell AFP when the visit would take place.
The government of president Bashar al-Assad is pushing the committee to focus on accusations that rebel forces have used chemical weapons, such as an alleged use by opposition forces on March 23 at Khan al-Assal, near Aleppo, AFP reported.
Assad’s regime stopped investigators from looking into British and French claims of chemical weapons use by Assad’s forces in Khan al-Assal and Homs last December, according to the U.N.
