Oman signed on Wednesday a 68-million-dollar agreement with the UK's National Power to build a power plant in the Sharqiya region to generate 250 megawatts of electricity, reported the Gulf News.
Oman's Minister of National Economy, Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, said the project, which will be financed, constructed and operated by the private sector, was expected to usher in a new economic era in Oman's search for self-reliance, said the daily.
He said the British company would pay $44 million of the total cost.
Minister of Electricity and Water, Sheikh Mohammed bin Ali Qatabi, said the plant would be fuelled by natural gas, the daily added.
The Kamil Power Plant, due to begin operating in 2002, is one of several energy and infrastructure-related ventures undertaken by the government for execution by the private sector in recent years.
Macki said the project, to be handled by Al Kamal Power Co as agents of National Power, would help attract foreign investment, the daily said - Albawaba.com
