The Emirati president has praised the US role in the Middle East peace summit in Camp David and expressed his support to the Palestinians during telephone conversations with his US and Palestinian counterparts, the official WAM news agency reported Tuesday.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, who is currently in Cleveland, Ohio, for medical tests, "was informed of recent developments in the Camp David summit" in a call from US President Bill Clinton, the agency said.

"Sheikh Zayed praised the efforts deployed by the US president and urged him to continue pushing the peace process with a view to achieving stability and security in the Middle East," it added.

In a separate call with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, Sheikh Zayed "reiterated the support of his country for the rights of the Palestinians and their demands in the peace negotiations."
