UAE’s Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co. (Thuraya) is launching full commercial services in mid-June with nearly 40,000 Thuraya mobile phones going live worldwide, a top company official said on Wednesday.

Thuraya expects to sell 400,000 handsets in one year, said the official, quoted by the Gulf News.

He said trial services were underway in the UAE, adding that trials would start in Italy, the UK and Denmark this week, and service would be launched in Sudan next week and then in several other markets.

"This will go on until mid-June, when full commercial services will begin with some 30,000 to 40,000 handsets going live in various markets worldwide," he said.

The cost of a Thuraya mobile phone in the UAE is Dh2,700 ($735) inclusive of the handset, SIM card and initial rental charges, said the paper – Albawaba.com
