The U.S.-led coalition has launched new air strikes near the flashpoint Kurdish city of Kobani in Syria, targeting the ISIL terrorist group.
The overnight air strikes targeted the bases and training camps belonging to the militant group.
However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the ISIL had pushed forward on Thursday. Referring to another acronym for the group, Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Observatory, said that the "ISIS control more than a third of Kobani - all eastern areas, a small part of the northeast and an area in the southeast."
This is while, local Kurdish officials have said that the militants are in control of a small part of the strategic city. There are rising fears of a massive massacre in Kobani once the terrorists capture the Kurdish city.
The U.S. Central Command has said, "Indications are that Kurdish militia there continue to control most of the city and are holding out against ISIL."
The battle for the town has emerged as a major early test for the air campaign aimed at rolling back and eventually destroying the terrorist cult.
The ISIL militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swathes of territory in neighboring Syria.
