The U.S. carried out air strikes near Syria’s border with Turkey overnight as the Turkish government takes steps to become militarily involved in the fight against Islamic State militants, AFP reports. The air strikes in Syria are now in their second week.

The strikes by the U.S. and its Arab allies are an effort to stop Islamic State militants from advancing on the town of Kobani and taking control of a large swathe of Syria’s northern border, according to AFP.

The Islamic State's advance on the town of Kobani has sent thousands of Kurdish refugees fleeing across the border into Turkey.
