Two American troops were killed and five injured Monday in a rocket attack in southern Baghdad, the US military said. The attack reported at 8 a.m. local time.
Meanwhile, Shi’ite fighters loyal to Moqtada al-Sadr on Monday started turning over their weapons to Iraqi police, a source close to al Sadr said.
According to the agreement by Sadr’s Mehdi Army, the fighters were due to hand in heavy weapons at three collection points - the town council building and two police stations. At al-Nasr station, Police Maj. Kadhim Salman said fighters had turned in machine guns, TNT paste, land mines and other explosives, The AP reporfted.
Outside the Habibiya police station, a pickup truck offloaded about 20 grenade launchers and dozens of mortar rounds.
Fighters in Sadr City have five days to hand in their weapons, National Security Adviser Kassim Daoud said on Sunday, adding that the government would spend more than $500 million on rebuilding the slums where two million Shi’ites live. (albawaba.com)
