Turkish warplanes have struck at Kurdish militant positions in the southeast of the country, according to media reports Tuesday.

The newspaper Hurriyet reported that Turkish officials said the attacks were in retaliation for Kurdish assaults on Turkish military posts in recent days. The attacks on the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers Party, are the first since Turkey and the PKK began a peace process last year, the report said.

Kurds have been furious with the Turkish government's inaction over the situation in Kobani, a largely Kurdish town along the Syrian border which has been under sustained assault by Islamic State terrorists. Recent protests within Turkey over the government's stance have left dozens dead.

According to the Hurriyet report, PKK forces had attacked a Turkish military post in Dağlıca with rocket-propelled grenades over the last three days, prompting the retaliation by F-4 and F-16 attack aircraft.
