ALBAWABA - Later on Wednesday night, Tunisian authorities announced the detention of the Secretary-General of Union Populaire Républicaine party (UPR), Lutfi Mraihi, according to Mosaïque FM.

Mraihi has been arrested on financial corruption charges. A probe was launched into the corruption allegations against Lotfi Mraihi was announced on July 1 by Mohamed Zitouna, the spokesman for the Tunis Court of First Instance.

Both the UPR president and secretary general are under suspicion for money laundering, asset transfers, and creating bank accounts outside of Central Bank approval.

Mohamed Zitouna claims that the UPR secretary general, who had been questioned in connection with another case involving phony sponsorships, disclosed the affair. Subsequently, she admitted that she had assisted Lotfi Mraihi in moving funds to his foreign accounts.

Lotfi Mraihi had been the subject of a search order and the UPR secretary general had been placed under arrest.

A wanted notice for the concerned individual has been released on social media since the end of last week. Furthermore, a number of influential figures have issued a call for the public to criticize the "fugitive".

Tunisian President Kais Saied has scheduled a presidential election for October 6. Saied announced the date in an official decree on Monday and did not declare whether he would seek re-election, but he is generally anticipated to run for another five-year term.
