ALBAWABA - An American official confirmed that US President Donald Trump met with Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh on Wednesday.

The Trump-al-Sharaa meeting came one day after the US President announced lifting sanctions on Syria after they were imposed following the civil war that erupted against Bashar Assad and his government, a  White House official said.

The official further noted that both leaders are expected to join another meeting along with other Gulf Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia during Trump's tour of the region, which will last for three days.

Yesterday, while the president was speaking at the Saudi-US Economic Forum in Riyadh, Donald Trump announced that his administration has decided to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, following discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Trump stated, "It's time for Syria to rise up. The Syrian people have endured extreme misery and death. They deserve a chance to rebuild."
