Three Iraqi police officers were killed and three injured by gunmen who fired and threw a hand grenade at them, it was reported Friday.

The attack occurred late Thursday when a two-car police patrol was manning a key intersection in western Baquba, north of Baghdad, policeman Adel Jalal told AFP

Meanwhile, South Korea is to send about 3,600 soldiers to the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, the military said Friday, two weeks after Seoul announced it would not dispatch troops to the northern town of Kirkuk.

For a new site for South Korean troop deployment, the U.S. and South Korean militaries have agreed to choose between Sulaimaniyah and Irbil in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, said the Defense Ministry in a statement.

"The two sides have agreed to maintain close consultations and make their final selection as soon as possible, after South Korea conducts onsite studies in the region," said the ministry's brief statement, cited by The AP.
