The Zambian police have fired tear gas at a crowd in central Lusaka amid continuing political turmoil, reported the BBC.online Saturday.

The crowd was gathering for a rally organized by ruling party politicians who have led the campaign against a third term in office for President Chiluba.

Chiluba made a surprise announcement on Friday that he was to step down at the end of his term in office, said the news service, adding that his announcement was met with skepticism by many Zambians.

But according to eyewitnesses, the rally was intended to be a peaceful demonstration to praise the president's decision.

On Friday night, the president said he was dissolving his cabinet, meaning he is theoretically running the country by himself until he appoints a new team – Albawaba.com
