The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Moroccan King, Mohamed IV, announced that he will not take part in the heads of states summit of the Union of the Arab Maghreb (UMA), scheduled to take place on May 25 and 26 in Tripoli, Libya.
EMarrakech reports that the decision was made due to the positions expressed by Algeria in regards to Sahara issue, positions which were dubbed “unacceptable” by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The tension between the two countries originates from Algeria's backing of the Polisario Front (which lays claim to the Moroccan Sahara since 1976) and due to this tension, the UMA (Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia) has failed to hold a summit since 1994.
