Thirteen nuns who were kidnapped last year from the historic Christian town of Maaloula in Syria may be released Sunday, local and Syrian media outlets reported.
A source involved in the negotiations to free them told Agence France-Presse last week that the kidnappers were from a group belonging to the Al Qaeda affiliate Al Nusra Front led by a man called Abu Malek Al Kuwaiti.
A pro-regime Syrian news agency said a deal has been reached to release the nuns, according to the Daily Star Lebanon.
The 13 nuns and three maids were kidnapped in December and transported to the nearby town of Yabrud, a rebel stronghold the army is fighting to recapture.
Earlier this week, negotiators reportedly lost contact with a group of nuns kidnapped from a Syrian town last year after their captors moved them.
