Jordan’s security men arrested several activists of the Palestinian faction Fateh-Intifada on Sunday at Baqaa refugee camp near Amman, after allegedly attacking Arab Knesset member Azmi Bishara during his visit to the camp last Tuesday.
According to a source close to the organization, which broke away from the PLO mainstream Fateh movement in 1983, the Intelligence agents took days to finally arrest the five activists who were at large.
According to the source, who asked to remain anonymous, the detainees are Osma Adel, Nasser Sarissi, Thaer Badou, Majed Abu Humeidan and Adel Abu Humeidan.
The Knesset member was driving into Baqaa, the second largest Palestinian refugee camp located north of Amman, to deliver a lecture at the offices of Hashd (The Peoples Democratic Party) on the Palestinian right of return and compensation. The assailants threw stones at his car breaking the window, but he was not hurt.
The assault on Bishara was to signal their rejection of normalization with Israel, the source said.
Following the incident, Political and popular gatherings in the camp issued a statement, in which they denounced Bishara’s visit, rejecting “all forms of normalization with Israel.” One of the signatories to the statement was the National Islamic Alliance, which is an apparent coalition between Fateh-Intifada and the Muslim Brotherhood in the camp.
