Summertown Interiors Enlivens Dubai Women’s College Library with Inspirational Designs
Summertown Interiors– the corporate turnkey interior design and fit-out contractor infuses creativity and inspiration into the Dubai Women’s College Library after completing an impressive redesign of the 400 square meter space.
The client’s brief required that a thought-provoking, "community think tank" environment should be encouraged by the new design of the library. Summertown Interiors transformed the college library into a place of inspiration, creative thinking, and networking for the students. The former library lacked the interior finesse that can turn what would ordinarily be just "a room full of books," into a place where young, growing minds can gather and share ideas. In fact, the college reported that students were spending a mere fraction of their time in the library, not interacting with one another, and were generally uninspired within the space. The college identified the poor color scheme, layout and design with having a direct impact on the students' time spent in the library, and the lack of motivation and inspiration within that environment.

Working within the parameters of “fun, inspiring and a team-engaging space,” Summertown Interiors’ engineers, planners, and designers incorporated a selection of bright, funky coloured furniture such as pinks, greens and yellows which added to the thought-inspiring feel of the design. Large, comfortable couches were placed in open spaces, offering sizable areas for student interaction and relaxation. The Orangebox Boundry couch was placed in the seating area, creating a “seating circle” to promote team work amongst the students.
"A space should encourage its intended function by catering to design elements that will create an appeal for what the space is providing. In this case, as we were encouraging reading, learning, idea generation, and networking, re-designing the library with bright colours, new furniture, and new seating arrangements were integral factors in stimulating student interaction," continued Kadhem .
Throughout the library, large pillars that were previously dark and drab in colour were painted in apple greens and vibrant yellows in order to open the space and make it more appealing to the students. The bright colours were chosen in particular to appeal to the female students.
