The secretary general of the ruling national conference party in Sudan, Ibrahim Ahmad Omar, on Wednesday praised Egyptian-Libyan conciliation efforts in his country as "the best initiative" and said that it was supported by the Khartoum government.
Omar, in a statement to journalists after a meeting with president Hosni Mubarak cited by the Kuwaiti official news agency (KUNA), said the talks dealt with the solid and distinctive ties between the two countries. He affirmed importance of promoting the Egyptian-Sudanese ties in various domains, especially the economy.
There have been several initiatives for Sudan, but the Egyptian-Libyan initiative "has remained the winning card," he said.
Cairo and Tripoli had presented a draft peace plan to end the an 18-year-old bloody conflict in Sudan. Omar's remarks coincided with present behind-the-curtain concilia! tion talks in Switzerland, involving representatives of the Sudanese government and south rebels to try work out a cease-fire.
