ALBAWABA - A civil war erupted between two major rival factions of the military government of Sudan on April 15, 2023, causing devastation and leaving 13 million of people displaced and in urgent need of basic humanitarian assistance.
Today, April 15, 2025, the conflict in Sudan is entering its third year amid increased famine, violence, and spreading diseases since the civil war began during Ramadan 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forced led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo generally referred to as Hemedti.
Sudanese children suffer the most from war
The UN Children's Agency (UNICEF) released a report saying that the number of children in Sudan who are in urgent need of humanitarian aid has doubled compared with 2023. UNICEF revealed that in 2025, 15 million children are suffering from hunger, increased diseases and violence doubled from 7.8 million at the start of 2023.

More than 3.2 million children under the age of 5 are acutely malnourished and 770,000 kids are facing severe acute malnutrition.
"Two years of violence and displacement have shattered the lives of millions of children across Sudan. Needs continue to outpace humanitarian funding," said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.
She added: "With the rainy season around the corner, children who are already reeling from malnutrition and disease will be harder to reach. I urge the international community to seize this pivotal window for action and step up for Sudan’s children."
The UN Agency also noted that" the number of grave violations against children" has jumped by 1000 percent in two years.

Sudan's civil war casualties:
According to UNHCR, the conflict in the African country has displaced around 13 million people within Sudan and across borders, and most of the displaced are children. More than 1.2 million Sudanese fled the war to Egypt since the outbreak of war in mid-April 2023, while over 200,000 people went to Libya and about 70,000 to Uganda.
- Main regions of origin for displaced people:
1. Khartoum: 3,500,400 displaced
2. South Darfur: 2,082,537 displaced
3. North Darfur: 1,844,175 displaced
At least 24,000 people have been killed, according to the United Nations, though activists say the number is much higher, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The ongoing conflict has created the "world’s largest humanitarian crisis" and "worst displacement crisis" in history, the human rights group confirmed, adding that the country could become the only one in the world experiencing famine.
From the start of the war in 2023 until March 28, about 11,292 attacks were recorded, averaging 16 per day, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) project.
