Sudan notified the Iranian ambassador Monday that he and his staffers must leave Khartoum, according to a local television report.
"In response to the barbaric attacks on the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad ... the government of Sudan announces the immediate severing of ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran," a Foreign Ministry statement said.
It is the third country to expel Iranian diplomats, after Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The UAE also recently downgraded the status of Iranian diplomats, saying it will limit the number permitted to stay in the country.
Saudi Arabia cut ties after Iranians stormed the Saudi Embassy in Tehran following Riyadh’s execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, along with 46 others. News of Nimr's execution was met with protests in Tehran which turned violent.
