Sudan on Saturday denounced the "provocative" visit by the leader of Israel's right-wing Likud opposition party to a Jerusalem site revered by Muslims and Jews, which sparked two days of clashes that have claimed the lives of thirteen Palestinians.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail told reporters that he had communicated this condemnation at a meeting here Saturday with the Palestinian ambassador to Khartoum, Omar Shelail Abu Rajai.

Sudan followed other Arab states and Islamic states in denouncing Thursday's visit to the Al-Aqsa mosque compound by Likud leader Ariel Sharon.

Ismail said he had assured the Palestinian ambassador that Sudan would "continue supporting the Palestinian cause for reaching a just and durable settlement based on the UN Security Council resolutions."

Such resolutions are "on the land-for-peace principle and establishment of an independent Palestinian state with the Holy Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital," he said.

He added that Sudan would continue efforts with other Arab and Muslim nations for "ensuring the safety of the sacred sites" in Jerusalem - KHARTOUM (AFP)
