UN Chief Kofi Annan is "hopeful" that a Middle East summit will be held in Egypt on Sunday with the participation of the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, his spokesman told AFP in Jerusalem Friday.

The UN secretary general had been in contact with US President Bill Clinton and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and would be meeting Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Gaza later the same day, spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said.

"The UN secretary expects leaders of both sides to impose a cessation of hostilities in the period leading up to and during the summit as is normal in these kinds of circumstances," Fawzi said.

"He will meet Mr. Arafat in Gaza this evening and will go tomorrow to Cairo to meet President Mubarak and hopefully there will be a summit on Sunday in Egypt," the UN spokesman added – JERUSALEM (AFP)
