A car bomb detonated at the funeral of a Kurdish official in northern Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 30 Iraqis and wounding more than 30, an official said. In other attacks across Iraq, 10 other people were killed on Sunday.
The attack on the funeral took place in the city of Tal Afar, 90 miles east of the Syrian border, said Khisru Goran, the deputy provincial governor and a spokesman for the Kurdish Democratic Party. According to The AP, Goran conveyed a suicide attacker detonated a car packed with explosives in a large tent where the funeral was being held.
The funeral was being held for Sayed Talib Sayed Wahab, a KDP official assassinated Saturday in Mosul, Goran said.
Elsewhere, gunmen shot dead five Iraqi policemen at a checkpoint in Baghdad on Sunday and the attack was followed by a bomb blast in the area, police said. According to Reuters, the incident took place near a military college that now serves as a camp for American forces.
In the well-coordinated attack, a pickup truck stopped near the checkpoint and gunmen jumped out and fired machine guns. They were joined by other armed men who had been hiding behind nearby trees, said police Lt. Col. Sabah Hamid al-Firtosi.
A car bomb targeting an American patrol in western Baghdad killed a child and injured 10 other Iraqis, police said.
Also Sunday morning, a car bomb exploded in the Zafaraniyah neighborhood of Baghdad, killing four Iraqi civilians and wounding 12, police said.
Two attacks took place Sunday in and around Hillah city, 60 miles south of Baghdad, police said. A roadside bomb exploded on a main road north of Hillah, wounding four civilians, said police Capt. Muthana Khalid.
Also in Hillah on Sunday, a police patrol was the target of a drive-by shooting attack but avoided any casualties. The police arrested the four gunmen involved, Khalid said.
At least 17 Iraqis and one U.S. soldier were killed in Iraq Saturday.
The U.S. Army, meanwhile, released a report clearing American troops in the death of an Italian intelligence agent in Iraq and recommending no disciplinary action. The agent was escorting a released Italian hostage when American soldiers fired on their car.
