A member of Somalia's transitional parliament, Hassan Ahmed Elmi, has been shot dead at his home by unidentified gunmen, relatives told AFP Monday.

It was the first assassination of a deputy in the new 245-seat parliament, which held its inaugural session less than two weeks ago.

The killing took place Sunday in the southwestern Mogadishu vicinity of Madina controlled by Somali warlord Musa Sudi Yalahow, one of the factional leaders who have rejected the outcome of the Djibouti conference on national reconciliation.

The Transitional Parliament was founded at this conference composed of civilians and unarmed politicians in neighboring Djibouti on August 13 -- MOGADISHU (AFP)
