ALBAWABA - Multiple gunshots were heard in different parts across Mali's capital Bamako, Reuters reported on Tuesday.
The reasons behind the gunfire are yet to be known, according to a Reuters witness and a security source.
In addition, eyewitnesses added that the gunfire began at around 5:30 a.m., but some people reportedly said they heard it from the direction near Modibo Keita International Airport.
On the other hand, others revealed that the gunfire came from next to the gendarmerie.
Meanwhile, AFP reported citing military sources in Mali that unknown armed men attacked at least one police base in the Malian capital.
The source said: "This morning armed men attacked at least one military police base in Bamako. They have not been formally identified."
Following the incident, the Malian army released a statement clarifying what happened on Tuesday morning. It confirmed that the army currently has full control of the situation in Bamako.
Mali's army described what happened in the capital as a "foiled infiltration attempt by 'terrorists' into a military police base."
"Early this morning, a group of terrorists tried to infiltrate the Faladie military police school," the army posted on social media. "The situation is under control," it added.
