The Russian Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoygu has cancelled a visit he was due to make to Iraq Saturday because of the situation on board the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk, according to ITAR-TASS.

The Kursk remains trapped at the bottom of the Barents Sea where it sank on August 12 with 118 crew on board, apparently after colliding with another vessel.

Shoygu took his decision after a meeting Saturday with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, ITAR-TASS said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Moscow Friday in response to the Kursk crisis, cutting short a Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit which had been due to continue Saturday in Ukraine.

Russian military officials made increasingly negative statements about the fate of the Kursk's crew Friday, and appeared to be preparing the Russian public for the worst - MOSCOW (AFP)
