According to Al-Quds al-Arabi daily, Egypt will soon appoint a new ambassador to Tel Aviv, replacing Mohammad Basyouni who was recalled last year due to the Israeli harsh military operations against the Palestinians. Arab diplomatic sources told the london-based daily that Egypt decided to send its new envoy to Israel, stipulating that the latter and the Palestinian Authority will resume political negotiations. Egypt asked for American guarantees on this issue.
The Egyptian foreign ministry’s leading candidate is Muhsin al-Naa’mani, who is considered an expert on the ‘Israeli issue.’ He served in the past in the Egyptian embassy in Paris and Rabat. Al-Naa’mani accompanied the Egyptian foreign minister, Ahmed Maher in his latest visit in Jerusalem and Ramallah.
Since the recall of Basyouni, Egypt had laid down three conditions that Tel Aviv must meet before a new ambassador would return to Israel. According to Basyouni himself, the first condition involved Israel calling a stop to "violence against the Palestinian people." The second condition called on Israel to return to the negotiating table, and the final Egyptian demand required Israel to resume the peace process "on the grounds of international resolutions."
