An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale hit central Taiwan Wednesday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, seismologists said.

The quake struck at 5:00 PM (0900 GMT) with its epicenter 14.8 kilometers (8.9 miles) east of Yuchih, a remote township in Nantou county. It originated 8.1 kilometers under the earth's surface.

On June 11, a quake with a magnitude of 6.7 hit central Taiwan, killing two people and injuring 36.

Minor tremors have been a daily occurrence on the island since a deadly quake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale struck on September 21, 1999, killing 2,400 people. It was the strongest to hit Taiwan in a century -- TAIPEI (AFP)
