ALBAWABA - During an official visit to the Iranian capital Tehran, Qatar's Minister of State Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi held a series of meetings with top Iranian officials, including the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Ahmadian and Foreign Minister Abdollahian.

In attempts to save the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal, Al Khulaifi met with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. In a statement, the Iranian foreign ministry said that the meeting "highlighted the importance of bilateral, regional, and international cooperation between the two countries".

This meeting counts for being the second meeting within the span of four months as Qatar works towards increasing its regional participation and serving as a go-between for Tehran and Washington.

Earlier in the day, the senior Qatari diplomat met and held talks with Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran's deputy foreign minister and lead nuclear negotiator, as well as Ali-Akbar Ahmadian, the country's newly appointed security chief.

The Qatari minister and Bagheri addressed the most recent developments in Doha-mediated efforts to restart the negotiations, which have been frozen since August.

Qatar is known to be involved in efforts to unlock Iran's frozen assets in South Korea, which gives Al-Khalifi's meetings with the senior Iranian security chief great significance.

It is worth recalling that in January of this year, Iran's foreign minister stated that Tehran had received messages from other parties to the 2015 agreement via Qatar with the intention of resuming the halted discussions.
