Secretary of State Colin Powell has reaffirmed in a meeting with Kuwait's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammad al-Sabah in Washington Monday his country’s security commitment to Kuwait.

According to the US State Department, Powell said the visit of the Kuwaiti diplomat to the State Department provided an opportunity to reaffirm "the commitment of the United States to the security of Kuwait and to the assurance that we will always be there to guard against aggression in that region of the world directed against Kuwait."

There are 4500 US troops in Kuwait, who remained after a US-led coalition forced Iraq out of the oil-rich Gulf emirate in 1991.

Powell also expressed support for the families of the 600 missing Kuwaitis "who remain missing and unaccounted for as a result of Iraq's terrible invasion and occupation of Kuwait." -- Albawaba.com
