Palestinians in southern Lebanon threw two hand grenades Tuesday on Israeli soldiers behind the border fence, without inflicting casualties, an AFP photographer saw.
About 50 Palestinian refugees gathered at this border point southeast of the coastal town of Naqoura and facing the Zareet settlement in northern Israel, he said.
They threw stones and two hand grenades, which exploded without causing injuries among the Israeli soldiers on the other side, who ducked down but did not fire back.
On Monday, Palestinian refugees also threw stones and a hand grenade for the first time at Israeli soldiers at the same border point without inflicting casualties.
The incidents followed a violent flare-up on Saturday when two Palestinian refugees were killed and 17 other people were wounded at Ramiya when Israeli soldiers opened fire at protestors hurling stones and Molotov cocktails over the border fence.
Rolf Knutsson, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's representative for southern Lebanon, said the protestors had been trying to cross over the border fence.
Soon after, at the eastern end of the border, Hizbollah guerrillas attacked Israeli positions and abducted three Israeli soldiers.
Also on Monday Knutsson called on Lebanese President, Emile Lahoud, Monday for official Lebanese forces to establish their authority on the border with Israel.
He said that Lahoud had made no commitment to any specific action.
Lebanon has sent 1,000 men to southern Lebanon -- 500 soldiers and 500 police -- into the border zone from which Israel withdrew May 24, but they have not been deployed directly on the border.
Israel has complained about the lack of intervention either by the United Nations or Lebanon to halt incidents.
Beirut held back its forces from a full deployment up to the border after Israel ended its 22-year occupation of southern Lebanon in May, saying there first must be a "just and comprehensive peace" in the region.
Observers say Syria, which controls political decision-making in Lebanon, prefers to keep the situation on the border volatile to further its own dealings with Israel -- RAMIYA, Lebanon (AFP)
