Ten Palestinians and one Israeli settler were arrested in Hebron Saturday after scuffles broke out in this flashpoint West Bank city, an AFP correspondent reported.

The clashes started when about 200 settlers started throwing tomatoes and other produce at shoppers in the market, Palestinian sources said.

The violence forced nearby shopkeepers to close.

The market is close to an enclave in the center of the town where some 400 extremist settlers live.

Under a US-brokered January 1997 agreement, Israel withdrew its troops from four-fifths of Hebron, retaining control of 20 percent of the city where the settlers and around 15,000 Palestinians live.

The city as a whole has a population of about 120,000 -- HEBRON, West Bank (AFP)
