Palestinian prime minister Ahmed Qurie promised on Saturday that presidential elections to replace Yasser Arafat would be held within the 60-day period set out by the law.
"The presidential elections will be held before the ninth of January. The leadership will meet to decide and check the exact dates," Qurie told reporters a day after Arafat was buried.
Meanwhile, jailed West Bank Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti is considering a bid, his wife Fadwa on Saturday told AFP.
Barghouti is in an Israeli jail serving five consecutive life sentences, but many consider him to be the most popular leader after Arafat. (albawaba.com)
