Three days of talks in New York this week between Israelis and Palestinians failed to make progress towards a peace settlement, a senior Palestinian official said Saturday.

The official, who declined to be identified, said Palestinian parliament speaker Ahmad Qorei had met Israeli Tourism Minister Amnon Lipkin-Shahak and Yossi Ginossar, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

The talks lasted from Tuesday to Thursday but ended in failure, the official said.

US President Bill Clinton has put forward a plan for a settlement to end decades of conflict but it has stumbled on the questions of sovereignty over holy places and the return of Palestinian refugees -- GAZA CITY (AFP)
