A rescue operation was underway Wednesday after a boat carrying migrants and refugees capsized off the coast of the Greek island of Lesbos, the Associated Press reported.

One child was killed and six people are missing since the boat overturned.

The Greek coast guard said a girl's body had been retrieved from the water, while four survivors had been rescued. Two of those rescued told authorities that they had been aboard an inflatable boat with nine other people, leaving from the nearby Turkish coast.

Last year Lesbos was the main arrival point for hundreds of thousands of asylum-seekers heading to the European Union, but numbers of new arrivals have fallen drastically since a deal was implemented in March between Turkey and the EU to limit refugees coming to Europe.
