The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) on Monday urged the United Nations to intervene to end immediately "Israeli attacks" on Palestinians.

The Jeddah-based OIC also called for an international inquiry into the "massacre of the Palestinians", adding that it held Israel responsible for four days of bloody clashes that have left 36 Palestinians dead and hundreds wounded.

The clashes were sparked by a controversial visit last Thursday to a disputed holy shrine in Jerusalem by Israeli right-wing leader Ariel Sharon.

The pan-Islamic organization also urged the "withdrawal of Israeli forces and their military equipment from Palestinian towns, villages and camps" in the West Bank.

The OIC, founded in 1969 and which currently has 56 members, on Saturday branded the killings "butchery" and "a premeditated criminal act", saying it was "part of the Israeli policy of Judaizing Jerusalem" -- JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AFP)
