U.S. President Barack Obama, who will seek a second four-year term in the election on November 6, said Monday night that Iran will not have nuclear weapons as long as he is the president.

"As long as I am president, Iran will not have nuclear weapons," said Obama at the third and final televised debate against his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, dominated by foreign policy issues.

The Democratic president also pointed out that the "crippling sanctions" against Iran are working and knelt the economy and the regime in Tehran.

For his part, Romney also advocated pursuing a strict regime of sanctions against Iran to force it to abandon its controversial nuclear program, saying that an Iran with nuclear weapons would be the "biggest threat" to the national security of the United States.
