NEC Display Solutions Unveils New Wide Format Displays for Medical Imaging
Strengthens MDview series with 24-inch and 24-inch wide-format LCD colour displays for use in PACS systems
NEC Display Solutions has announced that it has extended its MDview series of medical imaging displays with two wide-format colour devices. The new NEC MDview242-2 and MDview262-2 are equipped with IPS colour panels, which churn out a resolution of 1920-by-1200 pixels (2.3 megapixels) and accompany a pixel defect free central working area for superior image representation.
The devices are factory-delivered with a preset DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) curve, the required standard for medical digital imaging. This means that both NEC MDview242-2 and NEC MDview262-2 are ready “out of the box” as referral displays for PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) workstations. Additionally, its innovative X-Light® Pro feature eliminates variations in brightness and colour over the entire lifespan of the monitor.
“As a system that is crucial to managing medical images, such as film archives, displays on PACS workstations must be able to handle multiple high resolution images,” pointed out Ian Gobey, the General Manager of NEC Display Solutions Middle East. “It is important for hospitals in the region that image quality assurance and even everyday clinical viewing of medical images be done using a display capable of a specific resolution range. Most of the newer medical imaging modalities have the ability to create large volumes of high resolution images; increasing the demand for high resolution medical grade displays such as the new NEC MDview242-2 and MDview262-2.”
Whether used to view 3D images for surgical preparation or images of computed tomography, cross-sections in nuclear medicine or ultrasound images, both the MDview242-2 and the MDview262-2 guarantee maximum precision and colour accuracy. With IPS TFT panel technology offering a viewing angle of 178 degrees horizontally and vertically, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1 (MDview242-2) or 800:1 (MDview262-2), they also provide excellent image representation, especially in multi-screen systems.
According to Gobey, currently the standard for viewing/interpreting diagnostic radiography images is 1.2 to 2 megapixels, while the standard for CT, MRI and other multi-image exams is 2 megapixels. “Medical professionals who work with hardcopy images know that small delta difference can dramatically affect diagnosis. The specifications for pixel defects are more stringent for medical grade monitors than for PC-grade monitors. Hence, NEC’s new MDview242-2 and MDview262-2 come with IPS colour panels, and feature a resolution output of 2.3 megapixels,” added Gobey.
Individual calibration and regular constancy tests are simplicity itself with the aid of the GammaComp MD client software from NEC Display Solutions, supplied with every unit, and an optional photometer. In addition, the patented X-Light® Pro feature provides stable colour and brightness rendering. An internal sensor measures variations in the screen’s brightness to keep the set values constant by means of automatic adjustment. The monitors also feature digital uniformity control (DUC) for homogeneous brightness uniformity. These features ensure that the LCD displays satisfy the uniformity requirements for acceptance and constancy tests throughout their entire service lives.
To allow medical display systems to be set up at workstations in line with modern ergonomic standards, the NEC MDview242-2 and 262-2 are height-adjustable by up to 150 mm. The panel can be rotated by 90°, and can even be tilted. VESA-compliant brackets also allow it to be mounted on a wall or on swivel arms. These colour displays with calibratable 12-bit LUT arrive from the factory with a preset DICOM curve and can be integrated directly into PACS workstations with the DICOM GSDF Part 14 standard. They satisfy the optical requirements of Category B of the DIN V6868-57 standard and the AAPM TG-18 Guidelines for Secondary Class displays.
The NEC MDview242-2 and MDview262-2 are available with immediate effect through NEC Display Solutions as well as through certified medical trade resellers. NEC Display Solutions Europe offers a three-year warranty which also covers the backlight.
