ALBAWABA - ICJ president Nawaf Salam, who was named yesterday to lead the Lebanese government, five days after Lebanon elected a new president ending over 2-year political deadlock, arrived in Beirut on Tuesday to lead the new government.

Lebanese celebrated on Monday the naming of the president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, Nawaf Salam, as the new prime minister.

During the session in the Lebanese parliament with the attendance of new president Joseph Aoun, Salam gained 84 votes, while Najib Mikati received only nine.

The leader of Lebanon's biggest Maronite Christian bloc Gebran Bassil supported the election of Nawaf Salam and called him the "face of reform".

Some members of the ICJ president's family had a key role in Lebanese history, for instance, his uncle, Salam, helped Lebanon gain independence from France back in 1943 and was elected many times as a prime minister.

Salam's cousin, Tammam, led also the Lebanese government from 2014 to 2016, BBC reported.
